The Games in short

What this is, in one minute.

The Winter World Masters Games is the largest multi-sport winter event for masters athletes, held every four years under the International Masters Games Association (IMGA). In January 2028 it comes to Finland for the first time.

No qualification, no selection. Anyone over 30 can enter, at any level. People race in five-year age classes, so the 72-year-old skier has a real podium to chase. Most of them pay their own way, bring a partner or friend, and stay for a week. Earlier Games: Bled 2010, Québec 2015, Innsbruck 2020, Lombardia 2024.

Story angles

Stories worth the trip.

Ideas for editors and reporters. We help you find the people: by country, by sport, by age class or by local club, once they have agreed to talk to media.

Still flying Ski jumping 30+

People who jumped as kids and came back decades later. Why would anyone start ski jumping again at 60?

Into the ice Winter swimming

Racing in a pool cut into a frozen lake, then straight into the sauna. Finland's most photographed sport at the Games.

Teams for life Ice hockey · curling

Teams that have played together for thirty years and travel across the world to do it once more.

The personal podium Age classes

Five-year age classes mean a real race at every age. The winner in the 80+ class trained just as hard as the 35-year-old.

Started late New to sport

Some started at 19, some at 52. Stories of people who picked up a sport late in life and found their people.

Local heroes Clubs and volunteers

A thousand volunteers and dozens of local clubs run the Games. What does a small town gain from hosting the world?

Who can apply for media accreditation?

Journalists, photographers, broadcasters and content creators working on an assignment about the Games. We ask for an assignment letter or links to earlier work.

Can you find an athlete from my country or town?

Yes. When registration is open we can search the athletes who have agreed to talk to media, by country, sport, age class or club.

Can I use the photos on this site?

Use the photos in the photo bank. They are cleared for editorial use about the Games, with credit. The images on this page are for the website only.

Can I film at the venues?

Yes, for news and editorial use in the media zones. Broadcast, live streaming and long-form films need a separate agreement, because the rights sit with WMS and local OGOC. Ask us first.

Where is the media centre?

At the Masters Hub in Lahti, next to accreditation and the results centre. Media points at the other venues serve you during competitions.
