Terms and conditions.
Lahti, Heinola and Levi, Finland. 14 to 23 January 2028.
1. About these terms
These terms apply to everyone who registers as an athlete for the Winter World Masters Games 2028 (WWMG 2028). They form the agreement between you and the organiser.
The organiser is Salppuri Oy (business ID 3176721-2), Salpausselänkatu 8, 15110 Lahti, Finland. In these terms “we” and “us” mean Salppuri Oy. Salppuri Oy organises the Games under the rights granted by the City of Lahti and the World Masters Sports (WMS), which owns all rights for the event “Winter World Masters Games”.
You accept these terms when you complete your registration. If you register and pay for another person, you confirm that this person has read and accepted the terms.
The terms are published in English and Finnish. The English version is binding. If the two versions differ, the English version applies.
These terms cover athletes. Accompanying persons, team officials, volunteers and spectators will have their own terms when their registration opens. Add-on products bought in the WWMG shop (for example accommodation, merchandise and services) follow the terms shown with each product.
2. Who can take part
The Games are open to everyone who meets the minimum age of their sport and registers for it. There are no qualification standards.
- You must reach the minimum age set by the rules of your sport. The date that counts for your age and age class is set by the rules of each sport. In most sports the minimum age is 30.
- Your age class is calculated from your date of birth for each sport. You compete in that age class.
- You must show photo identification and proof of age when you collect your accreditation.
- Where the rules of your sport require it, you must be a member of a club that belongs to the national federation of that sport. Winter swimming, winter trail run and winter disc golf are open to everyone without club membership.
- Some sports have extra conditions, such as a FIS Masters code for FIS Masters Cup results in alpine skiing. The sport information page for each sport lists these conditions and is part of these terms.
- You must follow the rules of your sport, the decisions of the officials and the principles and rules of WMS.
3. Registration and payment
3.1 How registration works
Registration opens on 1 November 2026 at masters2028.com. The first week is reserved for people who pre-registered. After that registration is open to everyone.
You register in your own account, fill in the required forms and pay. Places are given in the order payments are received. When an event is full, you can join its waiting list. You pay only when we offer you a place.
Your entry is confirmed when payment is complete and you receive a confirmation email.
3.2 Fees
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Game entry, covers up to three sports | 225 € |
| Sport supplement, Alpine Skiing (Levi) | +25 € |
| Sport supplement, Cross-Country Skiing (Masters World Cup) | +25 € |
| Late entry fee, from 1 October 2027 | +50 € |
| Last-minute entry fee, from 1 January 2028 | +100 € |
| Change of sport, event or category after 30 November 2027 | 25 € |
All prices are in euros and include Finnish VAT 13,5 %. In team sports (ice hockey, curling and synchronised skating) every player pays their own game entry.
One game entry covers up to three sports. You can add a sport to your entry at any time until that sport closes for entries, if the event has places and the schedule allows it. Adding a sport costs nothing, except the supplement where one applies. We warn you about schedule clashes, but it is your responsibility to choose sports and events you can take part in. The late and last-minute entry fees apply to a new game entry, not to adding a sport to an existing one. No service or payment fee is added to the entry fees.
3.3 What the game entry includes
- Entry to your competitions, including official training as set out for each sport.
- Accreditation.
- Welcome package, handed out at the Games Centre, including a transit card.
- Entry to the Opening Ceremony and the Farewell Ceremony.
- Medal ceremonies.
- Public transport at negotiated WWMG rates.
- Timing and results.
The Alpine Skiing supplement covers the lift pass on competition days and FIS Masters entitlement. The Cross-Country Skiing supplement covers the Masters World Cup entry.
Travel, accommodation, meals, equipment and any other personal costs are your own responsibility.
3.4 Payment
You pay at registration by card, mobile wallet, Finnish online banking, MobilePay or Klarna. Your entry is not confirmed until payment has gone through.
If a company pays for your entry with a company code or an invoice, the company is the payer. An invoiced entry is confirmed when the invoice is issued and is cancelled if the invoice is not paid by its due date. Refunds for company-paid entries go to the company.
Bank and currency costs on your side are yours to pay.
4. Entry deadlines and late entries
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1.11.2026 | Registration opens. First week reserved for pre-registered people. |
| 30.9.2027 | Last day of the standard price. |
| 1.10.–31.12.2027 | Late entry. The late entry fee of 50 € is added to the game entry. |
| 31.12.2027 | Entries close for ice hockey, curling, synchronised skating, figure skating and alpine skiing. |
| 1.1.–14.1.2028 | Last-minute entry for all other sports, if places are left. The last-minute fee of 100 € is added to the game entry. |
| 14.1.2028 | All entries close. |
A sport or event may close earlier when it is full. Late and last-minute entries are accepted only where the event still has places.
5. Changes to your entry
Until 30 November 2027 you can change your sport, event or category yourself in My entries, free of charge, if the new event has places and the schedule allows it.
From 1 December 2027 changes are made by our service desk for a fee of 25 € per change, if the new event has places, the schedule allows it and start lists or draws are not yet made.
You can update your own details in your account at any time. Your name can be changed only to correct a spelling mistake.
6. Entries are personal
Your entry and accreditation are personal. You cannot transfer, sell or give your entry to another person. Another person cannot compete with your entry or use your accreditation. If this happens, both people can be disqualified and the entry is cancelled without a refund.
7. Cancellation by you
You can cancel your entry yourself in My entries. The refund depends on the date we receive your cancellation.
| When you cancel | Refund |
|---|---|
| By 30 June 2027 | Entry fees paid, minus an administration fee of 50 €. |
| 1 July to 30 November 2027 | 50 % of the entry fees paid. |
| From 1 December 2027 | No refund. |
Entry fees mean the game entry and any sport supplements. Late and last-minute entry fees and change fees are not refunded.
If you cancel one sport and keep others, there is no refund, because the game entry covers up to three sports. A refunded sport supplement follows the same table.
Refunds are paid to the original payment method within 30 days of the cancellation.
Your entry is a leisure service for a fixed date. The 14-day right of withdrawal for distance sales does not apply to it (Finnish Consumer Protection Act, chapter 6, section 15).
If you do not come to the Games, do not start, or stop during your competitions, there is no refund. The same applies if you cannot travel, for example because you are refused a visa or your travel is cancelled. In those cases the table above applies from the date you cancel.
8. Injury or illness
If you cannot take part in any of your sports because of injury or illness, you can get 50 % of the entry fees paid back. This applies at any time until the end of the Games, also after 1 December 2027.
Send your request with a medical certificate from a doctor in your home country or in Finland. The certificate must show that you cannot compete. We must receive the request by 23 January 2028. Refunds are paid within 30 days of an approved request.
Before 1 December 2027 the cancellation table in section 7 gives the same or a better refund.
9. Changes and cancellation by us
9.1 Changes to the programme
Winter sport depends on weather, snow and ice. We may change the schedule, venue, course, distance, format or start times of a competition. We may also combine age classes or events when there are too few entries, as the rules of the sport allow. We announce changes on masters2028.com and by email. Changes of this kind do not give a right to a refund.
9.2 Cancelled competitions
If weather, lack of snow, ice conditions, safety, an order by the authorities or another reason outside our control (force majeure) makes us cancel competitions, the following applies:
- If at least one of your sports takes place, there is no refund. The game entry covers the Games and up to three sports, not one competition.
- If all of your sports are cancelled, you get 50 % of the entry fees paid back.
- If the whole Games are cancelled, every athlete gets 50 % of the entry fees paid back.
Refunds are paid within 90 days of the cancellation announcement. We do not pay compensation for travel, accommodation or other costs in any case. We recommend travel insurance that covers these.
A decision to cancel the Cross-Country Skiing competitions is made together with the World Masters Association (WMA) and is announced no later than 10 days before the opening of the Games.
We may withdraw an athlete from competition if a doctor finds that the athlete is not fit to compete. This does not give a right to a refund beyond section 8.
10. Team sports
In ice hockey, curling and synchronised skating each player registers and pays personally. The player who creates the team receives a team code and gives it to the team. Other players join the team by entering the code. A player can join only their own team through its code.
The team code must be entered by 31 December 2027. A team must have the minimum number of players required by the rules of the sport by the same date.
Each player’s entry follows the cancellation table in section 7, also when a team withdraws. If we cancel a team because it does not have enough players, its players get 50 % of the entry fees paid back, in the same way as a cancelled competition in section 9.
11. Accreditation and missing details
To get your accreditation and compete, all the required details in your account must be complete: photo, identification details, the insurance declaration and, in team sports, the team code. Your account shows which details are still missing. The deadline for missing details is 31 December 2027.
You collect your accreditation in person at the Games Centre with photo identification. If your details are not complete, we cannot give you an accreditation. This does not give a right to a refund.
12. Your health and your own responsibility
When you register, you confirm that you are healthy and fit enough to train and compete in your sports at the level you have entered, in winter conditions. You are responsible for checking your health with a doctor if you have any doubt.
You take part at your own risk. Winter sport carries real risks, including falls, collisions, cold, ice and snow conditions, equipment failure and sudden health events such as heart problems. These can lead to serious injury or death. By registering, you confirm that you understand and accept these risks.
You are responsible for your own health, fitness, equipment and conduct, and for the costs of your own medical care, ambulance, rescue and travel home. You agree not to hold Salppuri Oy, WMS, the host cities, venue owners, sport partners, officials or volunteers liable for injury, illness, loss or damage that results from these risks, to the extent Finnish law allows. You are responsible for damage you cause to other people, venues or equipment.
13. Insurance
You must have valid accident and medical insurance that covers sport competition in Finland during the Games, including medical treatment, rescue and transport home. You confirm this with an insurance declaration in your account. Some sports require a licence-based insurance; the sport information page tells you if yours does.
The game entry does not include personal accident, medical, travel or cancellation insurance. We recommend travel insurance that also covers cancellation. We do not sell one.
We hold event liability insurance as required by WMS. It covers our legal liability as organiser. It is not accident or health insurance for you.
14. Our liability
We are liable for our own obligations under these terms. We are not liable for indirect costs or losses, such as travel, accommodation, lost income or lost holiday, or for lost, stolen or damaged personal property or equipment.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that Finnish law does not allow to be limited, such as liability for personal injury caused by our intent or gross negligence, or your rights as a consumer under mandatory law.
We are not liable for delays or failures caused by reasons outside our control (force majeure). Section 9 sets out what happens to your entry fees in that case.
15. Anti-doping, conduct and disqualification
WMS anti-doping rules apply. They follow the World Anti-Doping Code. Any athlete can be tested during the Games. Testing is done together with the Finnish Center for Integrity in Sports (SUEK).
You must behave fairly and respectfully towards other athletes, officials, volunteers and spectators, and follow the instructions of officials and venue staff.
Protests and appeals follow the rules of each sport. WMS acts as the Jury of Appeal for disputes that arise from the Games competitions.
We can cancel your entry, remove your results and accreditation and refuse you access to the Games without any refund if you:
- give false information about your identity, age or eligibility;
- break the anti-doping rules;
- let another person use your entry or accreditation; or
- behave in a way that is seriously against the rules, safety or the spirit of the Games.
16. Photos, video and media
The Games are photographed, filmed, recorded and broadcast. By registering, you allow Salppuri Oy, WMS, their partners and accredited media to photograph and film you during the Games, and to use your name, image, voice and results in any media worldwide, without time limit and without payment, to report on and promote WWMG 2028 and future WMS events. Marketing emails from us and our partners are sent only if you give a separate consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
You may take photos and video for your own private use. You may not use footage of the Games commercially without our written permission.
17. Personal data
Salppuri Oy is the controller of the personal data collected in registration. We process it to manage your entry, accreditation, competitions, results, safety and customer service, and to meet our obligations under the Host City Contract. The privacy notice at masters2028.com explains the details and your rights under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
- We share participant data with WMS, which owns the Games, after registration closes, as the Host City Contract requires.
- We share the data needed for start lists, results and anti-doping with sport partners, the timing and results provider and anti-doping authorities.
- Start lists and results are public. They show your name, age class, nationality, club and result.
Your photo and identification details are visible only to you and to the staff who need them for accreditation.
18. Travel, visa and accommodation
You arrange and pay for your own travel, visa and accommodation. If you need a visa, apply in good time. After your entry is paid, we can send you an invitation letter on request. A refused visa does not give a right to a refund beyond section 7.
19. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when the law, WMS requirements or the competition programme require it, or to make them clearer. The current version and its date are always published at masters2028.com. Changes do not reduce the refund rights you have under the version in force when you paid your entry.
20. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by Finnish law. Please contact us first, and we will try to solve the matter together.
If you are a consumer living in Finland, you can take a dispute to the Finnish Consumer Disputes Board (kuluttajariita.fi) after first contacting the Consumer Advisory Services. Other disputes are settled in the Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti. A consumer can also bring a claim in the court where they live when consumer law allows it.
